Yes, there is a way to create a better smoothie!
A smoothie that includes fruits, veggies, and a good balance of protein, carbs and fat.
Let’s start with a frozen ingredient.
Fruit is going to be the frozen ingredient and will account for the carbs in the smoothie. Just be sure to keep the amount of frozen ingredients to about a half cup for one serving.
Berries are going to be the lowest calorie and lowest glycemic choice for carbs in our smoothie. This will help keep our smoothie as balanced as possible.
This can look like any combination of the following:
- Strawberries
- Blueberries
- Mixed berries
- Cherries
- Blackberries
- You can also give frozen riced cauliflower a try!
Then you have the choice of adding half a banana. Again, the reason for a half banana is to keep the carbs balanced with protein and fat.
Next we will move on to our source of fat.
You will want to use a tablespoon of one of the following to add some fat, which will help keep you full until your next meal.
- Ground flax seeds
- Chia seeds
- Nut butter
- Nuts
Next ingredient is our protein- most people use protein powder so let’s go with that.
There are many different flavors that you can add into your smoothies. Vanilla is always a safe flavor and will go with most combinations. You will want to add one scoop of protein powder. Adding this protein powder will also help to keep you full until your next meal.
To up your veggie intake for the day you can add two large handfuls of spinach to your smoothie.
And guess what-you won’t even taste the spinach!!
You may end up with a green smoothie based on the berries you choose but you will be surprised at the ability to add spinach and how little it affects the taste of your smoothie!
Lastly, add your almond milk until your desired consistency. Throw your smoothie in a to go tumbler with a straw and drink your breakfast on your way.
